This is how I do it – Sounds

This booklet contains 26 pages in black and white.

This booklet is a learning resource designed specifically for neurodiverse learners who are developing early phonics and sound recognition skills. The aim of the booklet is to help children learn how to hear individual sounds in words and connect those sounds to letters.

Learners tap or point to each sound they hear in a word, write the letters that represent those sounds, and then write the full word. After completing the word, they identify and color the picture that matches the word. This structured process helps children connect sounds, letters, words and meaning.

The activities focus on simple phonetic patterns and encourage learners to break words into individual sounds.

Sections / Themes included in the booklet:

The booklet is organized according to short vowel sounds and simple phonetic word patterns.

1. Short a sound

Children practice identifying and writing words with the short a sound.

Examples include:

• map

Learners listen for the sounds in each word and write the letters that match each sound.

2. Short e sound

Children practice the short e sound in simple words.

Examples include:

These activities help learners recognize the vowel sound e within CVC words.

3. Short i sound

Children identify words that contain the short i sound.

Examples include:
