This is how I do it – My alphabet book

This booklet contains 26 pages in color and 26 pages in black and white.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Curamus School for Autism for their support and invaluable assistance with the design of these booklets.

This booklet is a learning resource designed specifically for neurodiverse learners who are learning the letters of the alphabet and their sounds. The aim of the booklet is to help children practise letter recognition, beginning sounds and early writing skills through simple, structured and visual activities.

Each page focuses on one letter of the alphabet and includes activities where children practise writing the letter, identifying pictures that begin with that sound, and tracing the letter shape.

The combination of visual pictures, tracing activities and sound recognition helps children develop a strong foundation for early reading and phonics skills.

Sections / Themes included in the booklet.

The booklet contains activities for every letter of the alphabet from A to Z. Each letter page follows the same clear and predictable structure.

1. Practise the letter

Children first see a large example of the letter and practise recognising its shape.

For example:

  • A a – apple
  • B b – bee
  • C c – cat
  • D d – duck
  • E e – elephant
  • F f – fish

This helps learners connect the letter with its beginning sound.

2. Beginning sound recognition

Children look at several pictures and must cover or select the pictures that start with the correct letter sound.

Examples include:

A

  • apple
  • ant
  • anchor

B

  • bee
  • bear
  • bus

C

  • cat
  • car
  • cake

D

  • duck
  • dog
  • door

This activity strengthens phonics awareness and sound identification.

3. Trace the letters

Children practise writing the letter by tracing it several times on the page.

Each page includes tracing practice such as:

  • a a a
  • b b b
  • c c c
  • d d d

This supports the development of letter formation and handwriting skills.

4. Alphabet progression

The booklet continues with the full alphabet.
