This is how I do it – Everyone is special (Me too)

This booklet contains 17 pages in colour and 17 pages in black and white.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Curamus School for Autism for their support and invaluable assistance with the design of these booklets.

This booklet is a social-emotional learning resource designed specifically for neurodiverse learners. The aim of the booklet is to help children understand that every person is unique and special, including themselves.

Through simple visual activities, comparison tasks and reflection exercises, learners explore their own identity, emotions, similarities and differences with others, and the people who support them. The activities encourage children to build self-confidence, self-awareness and respect for others.

Sections / Themes included in the booklet:

The booklet includes several activities that help learners explore their identity and relationships with others.

1. Understanding emotions

Children identify and recognise different emotions such as:

  • happy
  • worried
  • sad
  • angry.

Learners match or paste the correct emotion pictures to help them recognise how people may feel in different situations.

2. What is the same as my friend?

Learners compare themselves with a friend and identify things that are the same between them.

For example, they may look at pictures and choose one feature that is the same between themselves and their friend.

3. What is different from my friend?

Children also learn that people can be different from each other.

Learners look at pictures and choose one feature that is different between themselves and their friend.

This helps children understand and accept differences between people.

4. Being different is okay

The booklet reinforces the message that being different is okay and that everyone has their own strengths and characteristics.

5. My family and support system

Learners identify the people who support them by drawing or pasting pictures of:

  • family members
  • people who help them at school
  • people who help them at home.

This activity helps children recognise their support network.

6. I am special

At the end of the booklet, learners receive a “I am special” certificate.

Children complete the certificate with their name and celebrate positive actions such as:

  • helping someone
  • being kind
  • trying their best.

Benefits of this booklet for the child:

  • self-confidence and positive self-image
