This is how I do it – My Family

This booklet contains 25 pages in colour and 25 pages in black and white.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Curamus School for Autism for their support and invaluable assistance with the design of these booklets.

1. What is a family?

Children learn that a family is made up of people who:

  • love each other
  • care for each other

Learners draw or paste a picture of their own family and identify family members such as:

  • mom and dad
  • grandpa and grandma
  • brothers and sisters
  • pets

2. Things families do together

Children identify activities that families do together, such as:

  • eating together
  • watching television
  • playing games
  • reading stories
  • going for a walk

3. Helping at home

Learners think about how they help at home, for example:

  • laundry
  • washing dishes
  • cooking
  • feeding pets

They draw or choose a task where they help their family.

4. Healthy habits at home

Children distinguish between healthy and unhealthy behavior, such as:

  • saying please and thank you
  • eating healthy together
  • helping as a team
  • too much screen time
  • being rude

5. My senses

The booklet introduces the five senses:

  • sight
  • hearing
  • smell
  • taste
  • touch

Children learn how they use their senses to understand the world and their family experiences.

6. Family and senses

Learners connect senses to family activities, for example:

  • watching a movie (sight)
  • listening to a story (hearing)
  • eating together (taste)
  • hugging a family member (touch)

7. My favorite family activity

Children draw or paste a picture of their favorite activity with their family.

8. My family tree

Learners build their own family tree by cutting and pasting pictures.

9. My family helps me

Children learn that their family supports them through different emotions, such as when they feel:

  • sad
  • scared
  • angry
  • lonely

They complete sentences to show how their family helps them.

10. Reading comprehension: My family

The booklet includes a short story about a child and their family, followed by questions to test understanding.
